About Mijas

Mijas Pueblo is located 8 km from Fuengirola up against the Mijas mountains. It is a typical Andalusian mountain village with stunning views of Fuengirola and the Mediterranean. The municipality of Mijas is large in area and it extends down to and borders Fuengirola and on one side of Fuengirola right down to the Mediterranean. This means that familiar villages such as La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda belong to the municipality of Mijas and not to Fuengirola as it is easy to believe geographically.

A strange situation is that the municipality of Mijas has more foreigners than Spaniards!

Mijas is therefore a pioneer municipality in establishing an immigration department in the municipal town hall. They were the first to do this on the coast (perhaps even in the whole of Spain) and now they have expanded to three different offices with English and Danish speaking staff - geographically located in the Town Hall in Mijas village, in the Police House in La Cala de Mijas and in Calahonda.

One of the popular ways to get around Mijas Pueblo as a tourist is on the back of a donkey. It is called "donkey taxi" (burrotaxi) and it is one of the tourist attractions in Mijas village.
